THE COMMUNICATION BETWEEN SDUSD AND AAAE/AASSC

A recurrent request of AAAE to the superintendent over the last four years has been to identify what specific programs/activities are being implemented at specific school sites and at the district level to improve the educational outcomes of AA/AS consistent with the AAAE Blueprint to accelerate the academic achievement of African American students and district goals.  We want to know the funding sources for all efforts focusing on AA/AS, what degree of success and challenges have been experienced in these efforts, and what the district is doing based on these results. AAAE has not received an adequate response to this specific request made over and over again.

Major concerns made by AAAE/AASSC in meetings included:

  • inadequate attention to the academic support needed by AA/AS to perform at or close to grade level, Pre K-12
  • most AA/AS going to middle and then high school being two or more years below grade level, and
  • misleading statistics the district presents on AA/AS, as well as the lack of transparency in district budgets.
