Sign up for one of the following grade levels to give a 2 minute speech about and African American person throughout Black History and win a prize!

 

Contestant must be enrolled in any school throughout San Diego County.

 

Grade Levels

 

Elementary School 2nd - 5th

Middle School 6th - 8th

High School 9th - 12th

Black History Month Speech Contest Rules and Logistics:

 

Arrival Time: All students must arrive no later than 4:30 PM. Student will check-in at the check-in table in the auditorium lobby.

 

Topic/Person: Each contestant shall choose the person for his/her speech but cannot be one of the following people (Dr. Martin Luther King. Jr., Rosa Parks, and Harriett Tubman). Students must think outside the normal history lesson and compose a biography speech based on the life and legacy of an African American person throughout history. There are no restrictions regarding the choice of the person the student wants to portray. (Please note that there may be others portraying the same character.) If a contestant is in doubt about the appropriateness of a person they wish to portray, he or she should check with the Association of African American Educators Executive Board at sandiegoaaae@gmail.com or call us at (858) 859-2547.  

 

Students must perform the biography speech in full character (character dress up) in front of a panel of judges. These are to be dramatic speech presentations. Enthusiasm, good eye contact, and movement are encouraged; however, the student should not go to high extremes. Content should be relevant and in good taste. All speeches must be the original work of the student. All participants will receive Black History Apparel with the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners being acknowledge with a trophy.

 

Length: Speeches must be at least 2 minutes maximum. Penalty points will be subtracted for time infractions, at the rate of two points for every minute or fraction thereof that a contestant’s speech runs over the 2 minute maximum.

 

Props: Props may be used.

 

Speaking Note Cards: Contestants may speak from notes at the Elementary School level competition if need. However, we encourage everyone to practice and try to memorize the speech. Only a single 8 x 10 sheet may be used (Elementary Students Only). No notes are allowed for the Middle and High School level competition.
